The neighbourhood
Culture, food and history steps from home, with Avenida Paulista just up the hill.
São Paulo's Italian heart, settled by immigrants in the late 1800s and also rooted in the city's Black history and samba. Cantinas, old-school bakeries, theatres and a real neighbourhood feel.
The city's most famous avenue: museums, cultural centres, bookshops, cafés and the metro. On Sundays it's closed to cars and open to pedestrians.
From Bixiga it's easy to reach the historic centre and neighbouring districts like Liberdade, São Paulo's Japanese quarter.
Hundreds of stalls with antiques, books, china and curiosities in Praça Dom Orione.
Pasta, pizza and traditional bakeries. Some have been running for over a century.
The story of the neighbourhood, its immigrants, samba and Adoniran Barbosa.
Bixiga's traditional Italian street festival, with food stalls and music.
Bixiga is the birthplace of São Paulo samba. On weekend nights there's live samba in the neighbourhood, with music, cold beer and lots of dancing.
The city's best-known museum, with its open space underneath, and the avenue opened to pedestrians, with buskers and street life.
A cultural centre with exhibitions, a café and a rooftop terrace with views over the avenue and the city.
A space for contemporary Japanese culture, with exhibitions, design and a shop, behind a striking wooden façade.
Instituto Moreira Salles has photography and art exhibitions, a library, a cinema and a terrace on the 5th floor.
Brazilian art exhibitions, music and cultural events, next to Brigadeiro station.
A historic mansion with a rose garden among the Paulista towers, now a centre for poetry and literature.
A patch of Atlantic Forest opposite MASP, with shady paths for a break from the city.
